BOSTON --Gov. Mitt Romney appointed to the state Board of Education on Tuesday a leader in the high tech community and also re-named to the nine-member board the head of the Urban League of Springfield.
The governor said Christopher R. Anderson, president of the Massachusetts High Technology Council, "understands the need for excellence in math and science" to produce skilled workers for the technology sector.
Anderson, who is also president of the Massachusetts Defense Technology Initiative, which lobbied to save the state's bases before the Pentagon released the list of recommended base closings, replaces J. Richard Crowley, whose term had expired.
Henry M. Thomas III, a visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and at Curry College in Milton, was reappointed to the board, which sets policy for K-12 education in Massachusetts.
Thomas, the chief executive and president of the Urban League of Springfield, has been a member of the Board of Education since 2001. Appointees serve unpaid five-year terms.
"I urge Henry to continue to speak for these students as we work to close the achievement gap that persists between white and nonwhite students," Romney said in a statement.
